T-Mobile Sidekick 2008 Overview

July 30, 2008 – 7:00 am

t-mobile sidekick 2008

T-Mobile’s latest Sidekick is finally out and available for purchase. We also finally have an official name for it well kind of. T-Mobile is packaging it as the T-Mobile Sidekick 2008, but they are referring to it just as the T-Mobile Sidekick.

Anyways the new T-Mobile Sidekick 2008 has some nice improvements over the previous Sidekick LX. The new device is smaller, lighter, and a slightly more modern design weighing in at 4.5 oz. It also has a noticeably better camera with 2 mega pixels, but there where no improvements on the video camera. Also its unfortunately still using the old Edge network instead of the new 3G network.

Probably one of the coolest things about this Sidekick over the previous is the users ability to create custom skins or shells to add on to the device. T-Mobile will also of course will be selling shells for the new phone as well.

Overall its seems like a nice new phone with some good small improvements and a decent price at $149.99 with a two year contract from T-Mobile.

Sidekick LX Review

October 29, 2007 – 10:36 am

The new T-Mobile Sidekick LX builds on a lot of improvements that Danger and T-Mobile started making with the Sidekick 3. The T-Mobile Sidekick LX continues to use the same navigation layout as the Sidekick 3. With the same roller ball, send and end keys, as well as x and check keys on the right hand side of the phone. On the left hand side of the phone you will find the main menu jump button as well as the standard menu button which brings up contextual menus. The d-pad now also still works as a speaker. However similar to the Sidekick 3 its not the greatest speaker. On the bottom of the Sidekick LX you will find the volume key, as well as the on/off button. On the top of the phone you will find the left and right shoulder buttons. On the left hand side you will find the USB port for charging, as well as a 3.5mm headset jack. This means that you can plug your regular headphones.

One of the things you may notice about the Sidekick LX is that the screen is not tiny or dull. This is because of the new WQVGA Screen from Sharp. Which means its 240*400 in dimensions. Which is good as the new operating system uses pretty much everyone of these pixels. You will also find that this screen is very easy to read out doors, as it has a very bright backlight. This gives the Sidekick LX a very clear bright picture, and it does this without draining the battery anymore then on past models.

When you flip the phone open it snaps right up and reveals the standard Sidekick keypad beneath. Which means that you get the standard three rows of letters which are off set, a row of punctuation keys plus a space bar, as well as a full row of numbers. The Sidekick LX has also gone back to a rubberized keyboard similar to the old Sidekick 2 keyboard.

One of the upgrades that the Sidekick LX brings is in the messaging application of the phone. The new Sidekick LX finally has the ability to send picture messages, instead of just text messages. There is also a new music play which will still play in the background while using the phone. However about the only other noticeable change is the now 2 mega pixel camera. Which has an updated new interface.

The T-Mobile Sidekick LX has all of the upgrades that we have been waiting for. Its finally slim enough to slip into your pocket, it has a great screen, and just about every other feature that we always wished the Sidekick would have including picture messaging.

Tmobile Sidekick 3 Review

October 19, 2007 – 10:05 pm

Tmobile Sidekick 3

The T-Mobile Sidekick 3 still has the same spring loaded swiveling screen, keeping with the Sidekick’s trademark design. A full keyboard located underneath the screen in now plastic coated instead of the same old rubber coated keyboard. The Sidekick is held horizontally to do everything except talk on like a traditional a cell phone. However most won’t need to do this now that it also supports Blue tooth headsets.

On the left side of the T-Mobile Sidekick 3 face you have a menu and jump button as well as the dpad. On the right side of the phone there is now a track ball to make using the device more convenient. The track ball is surrounded by the Sidekicks cancel and okay keys, as well as the send and ends keys. You will find that the track ball is responsive and easy to use. On the bottom are the volume keys and the power button, as well as the headset jack for stereo headsets.

On the right side of the Sidekick 3 you will find the USB and charging ports, and on the top you will find two shoulder buttons which come in handy while taking pictures. The built in camera in the Sidekick 3 has been upgraded to a 1.3 mega pixel. However the phone still has a poor flash. On the back side of the phone you will now find a removable back. Underneath this lies a memory card slot and replaceable battery, so you can carry a spare and then just replace them when they run out.

The keyboard on the T-Mobile Sidekick 3 is well laid out with nice size keys, for those of you who will be typing a lot. The phone also has an actual row of number keys which is rare on qwerty phones. This also provides easily accessible internet punctuation keys. The Sidekick 3 is also a smaller phone Sidekick’s before it, being slightly shorter and much more narrow. We found that the T-Mobile Sidekick 3 springs open with a lot of force, maybe too much as there is a lot of rattling as it does so. But the Sidekick 3 is not only smaller its faster. You will find while browsing the internet on the Sidekick 3 that it will download and load pages much faster.

The T-Mobile Sidekick 3 now also has an MP3 player. So you can now drop MP3’s onto the memory card and you will find them automatically sorted for you on the phone. The sorting is pretty convenient , but it takes a bit more clicking to get the music actually playing then say an iPod. One other bad feature with the MP3 player is the cancel button which is also the play and pause key, which makes stopping the current song a pain. The default volume on the phones MP3 player is pretty low but the volume can be adjusted separately from the rest of the phone, which comes in handy. Another nice feature the MP3 player in the T-Mobile Sidekick 3 has is like everything else on the phone will keep playing when you switch to other applications.

Tmobile Wing Detailed Review

August 18, 2007 – 9:46 pm

Tmobile Wing

This is the Tmobile Wing, Tmobile’s follow up to the MDA. The two devices are similar, however the Wing has a new slicker form factor, as well as a two mega pixel camera, which is an upgrade from last years version. Most importantly this is one of the first devices to launch in the US with Windows Mobile 6, which is professional edition and used to be called Pocket PC. This just means that the Tmobile Wing has a touch screen.

Like most Windows Mobile phones the Tmobile Wing has tons of buttons. On the front you will find a D-pad with a center select key, soft keys, Windows and ok keys, as well as a send and end key. On the right hand side of the phone, where the camera would normally be there is a stylus, a quick jump to the messaging center, as well as the voice activation button. On the top of the phone you will find the on/off button, which is also used to turn the screen on once it locks. On the left side of the phone you will find the camera button, which makes it very convenient for using the phone as a camera. You will also find the volume control and a microSD slot, which is concealed behind a rubber door. On the bottom of the phone you will find a mini USB jack, which is used for charging, syncing, as well as a headset port.

Finally if you slide the top piece of the phone upwards, the keyboard lies beneath. The nice feature this phone has is the screen comes on as soon as you slide the screen up. The Tmobile Wing also has some new indicator lights as well, with blue led lights which come on when you press the shift key and the function key.

One of the bad things you will find while holding the Tmobile Wing with the slider open is that your finger will be positioned right on the camera lens, which will unfortunately leave fingerprints on the lens. You will also notice that the home screen takes quite a long time to come back on. One of the things that Tmobile has done with the Wing in the interest of making things easier to find is packing the home screen full of different things. They have done this to the point where you can’t touch any part of the screen without activating something. All of these features also slow down the loading time of the Tmobile Wing.

There are some new note worthy features in Windows Mobile Professional. One of which is the fact that there is a Windows Live application as well as a Live Search application. This can be kind of confusing, seeing you would think they are basically the same thing, however they each give you access to different features. The Windows Live application gives you access to messenger, email, and Windows Live web search. While Windows Live search gives you access to windows local.

Windows Mobile 6 Professional finally added the quick find feature, which has been available on Windows Mobile Smart Phone, the standard for quite some time. Windows Mobile 6 Professional also has all of the office applications that the standard edition has. Finally the battery life in the new Tmobile Wing is amazing, you can expect to get four days or so on a charge.

We wish the home screen would have had fewer icons making it easier to use, we also wish that they would have upgraded the processor in the Tmobile Wing over the from the processor that was in the MDA. The processor is just to slow to run Windows Mobile 6 especially with all of the extras Tmobile added. But other then that its a huge improvement and a really nice phone. If you are considering buying a new phone I would highly reccomend purchasing the Tmobile Wing.
